The out of balance force generating shaft rotates about the central axis of the ground compacting rolls and the position of the centre of gravity of the out of balance mass can be adjusted relative to the compacting roll axis. The out of balance mass consists of two masses which are arranged eccentrically on a shaft. The position of these masses can be adjusted relative to each other. One of the masses can be fixed on the shaft and the other mass can be adjustable. The direction of the resultant alternating out of balance force is adjusted to suit the working conditions. In one version the rotating centre of the adjustable mass does not coincide with the rotating axis of the shaft. This causes adjustment of the position of the moving mass. A spring can be provided around the shaft which acts against the relative rotation of these masses.
