1420449 Medicinal iron preparations DEUTSCHE GOLD-UND SILBER-SCHEIDEANSTALT 31 July 1973 [31 July 1972] 36460/73 Heading ASB [Also in Division C3] Agents for the peroral treatment of acute anaemia and/or for the prophylactic treatment of anaemia in warm-blooded omnivores, e.g. piglets, comprise iron salts or complexes of polymers having an average degree of polymerisation of 3-600 and defined in terms of the molar percentages of 5 different types of unit, including essentially units containing carboxyl groups together with units containing aldehyde groups and/or units containing hydroxy groups. Units derived from dicarboxylic acids and units obtained by ring- opening polymerisation of aldehydes are optional. Suitable polymers are (a) a copolymer containing aldehyde groups and carboxyl groups and prepared by oxidising copolymerisation of acrylic acid and acrolein, and (b) a copolymer containing hydroxy and carboxyl groups prepared by subjecting polymer (a) to a Cannizzaro reaction with NaOH. In Example 1, an iron salt/complex of a (b)-type polymer is used per se in the treatment of piglets. The polymers may be used in admixture with other pharmaceutically active substances e.g. vitamins and antibiotics, excipients or other additives, e.g. antioxidants.
