The ventricle has a ventricle cavity 31 with an inlet (47) Fig. 1 (not shown) and outlet 48 for the blood. All parts of the device which are in contact with blood are covered with a blood compatible fabric 36. The inlet (47) and outlet 48 comprise maleconnectors (23) and 27 respectively in which are situated one-way flow valves (21) and (25). The inlet male-connector (23) mates with a female connector (22) of an atrium (24) and the other male-connector 27 mates with a female-connector 26 of a sinus 15 whose other end comprises a tubulation 28. Two such ventricles may be used as an artificial heart, Fig. 5 (not shown) with the atrium (13), (14) being sutured to the atrial remnants and the tubulation 28 of each ventricle sutured to the pulmonary artery and aorta respectively. In a further embodiment a single ventricle is used as a heart assist device, Fig. 8 (not shown) the atrium being replaced by a sinus (88) having a tubulation (87) which is joined to the apex of a heart by an apex connector 74 and the outlet of the device connected via a sinus (89) and tubulation (92) to the descending aorta. The tubulations (87) (92) are made of arterial graft tubing comprising spirally wound metal wire covered with silicone rubber and an interior covering of blood compatible fabric.
