1384907 Compositions for whitening fabrics COLGATE-PALMOLIVE CO 8 March 1972 [15 March 1971] 10832/72 Heading C4A [Also in Division D1] A laundry composition comprises an organic surfactant and a water-soluble alkali-stable and heat-stable disazo blue dyestuff, but contains no hypochlorite bleach. If formulated as a granular solid up to 0À005% by wt. of the dyestuff may be present, and if as a liquid up to 0À01%. The dyestuff may be of general Formula I wherein each of R, R 1 , R 2 , R 3 , R 4 and R 5 is selected from hydrogen, halogen, hydroxyl, alkoxy (1-3C) and alkyl (1-3C), M is alkali metal or alkaline earth metal and A is NH, NH.CO.NH or NH.aryl.NH. The dyestuff may be in the form of a metal (e.g. copper, nickel or cobalt) complex. The use of CI Direct Violet 43 (which is the bis-copper complex of I where R, R 1 , R 2 and R 3 are OH; R 4 and R 5 are H, A is NH and M is Na) and C.I. Acid Blue 113 (which is II where R and R 1 -R 5 are all H, A is NH and M is Na) and mixtures of these together is exemplified. The dyestuff may be formulated as a granular or liquid detergent composition, a soap composition or a presoak composition. Many anionic, non-ionic, polar non-ionic, amphoteric, zwitterionic and cationic detergents, alkali metal soaps, builders, optical brighteners, germicides, soil suspending agents and antioxidants which may be incorporated into the compositions are specified. In Examples 1-10, which disclose dyestuff containing granular detergent compositions, the additives include: linear tridecyl benzene sulphonate the reaction product of 11 moles ethylene oxide with one mole of a blend of C 14 -C 15 primary alcohols, carboxymethyl cellulose, polyvinyl alcohol and the nonal builders. Example 11 relates to a soap powder composition based on the sodium soap of mixed tallow and coconut fatty acids and containing C.I. Acid Blue 113. Examples 12-14 concern liquid detergent compositions based on sodium xylene sulphonate and the reaction product of 3 moles ethylene oxide with one mole of a blend of C 12 -C 15 primary alkanols and containing sodium citrate in addition to the dyestuff. Example 16 describes a presoak composition based on linear tridecyl benzene sulphonate, and containing Alcalase Novo Protease enzyme, the usual builders and C.I. Acid Blue 113. Example 15 discloses a softening composition comprising 2-heptadecyl-1-methyl- [(2 - stearoxylamido)ethyl] - imidazolinium methyl sulphate, C.I. Acid Blue 113, optical brightener, perfume and water.
