The retention value scale is marked in logarithmic progression. The retention index scale is marked in lineal progression. The scales are movable relative to each other. A network of lines is attached to each scale. One scale has a network of lines running vertically. The other scale has a network of lines which radiate outwards, inclining in one direction at progressively increasing angles of incidence. The line network of one scale lays over the line network of the other scale. The retention index is designed to measure all components to be catalysed occurring with all column temperatures that arise and is calibrated for every stationary phase or can give information from a series in chromatogram.
