The steel tank is constructed with a double bottom. This compartment is divided vertically into sections to maintain the strength of the structure. The compartment is filled with inert gas maintained at a pressure slightly higher than the liquid pressure on the bottom of the tank. This is achieved by pressurising the space below the bottom of the tank and regulating this pressure by means of a leak off into a header tank with a second leak off into the inside of the main liquid tank and at the bottom of the tank. Water may be used in place of the inert gas but in either case only low usage of the pressurising medium is required.
