The combined tape recorder and radio (1) has a compartment (3), with a hinged closure flap (9), in which the tape cassette can be located. This cassette has two tape reels and a central transparent part, to allow the amount of tape wound on each reel to be seen. The cassette compartment (3) is provided with internal illuminating means, e.g. an electric light bulb (12) located in an aperture (11) in the wall of the cassette compartment (3), positioned adjacent the transparent part of the tape cassette, so that the amount of tape on each cassette reel can be readily seen.
