The male pipe end has a threaded sleeve (12, 18) and a thrust flange (14) formed on it. Between these portions a threaded spring (17), split into two congruent halves, is fitted over the male pipe end (10), and screwed into the socket of the female pipe (11). The ring can have an external thread, screwing into an internal one in the socket, and to absorb thrust the flange can bear against the end of the ring inserted in the socket. A seal can be inserted between the socket end face and a flange (22) on the ring to prevent water or gas escape.
