Solid or liquid particles are removed from a gas stream, or solids from a liquid stream, by impingement on an array of baffles 4, which have collecting troughs 5 in their trailing edges set back behind the general plane of the leading face of the baffle. The collecting troughs 5 may extend downwards with or beyond the rest of the baffles into a sump (Fig. 1, not shown) which may be cut off from the main duct by a wall (7') (Fig. 2, not shown). Baffles may be of various sections (Figs. 4-11, not shown) and may be hollow (Figs. 14 to 16, not shown), whereby cooling or heating medium is passed therethrough to aid separation. In Figs. 12, 13 (not shown) blowers effecting the flow are located respectively upstream and downstream of the baffle array, and the baffles are accordingly set at 50 degrees or 40 degrees to the duct axis. In Figs. 17 -19 (not shown) two concentric arrays of baffles enclose a radial impeller (32), and in Fig. 20 (not shown) a circuit is illustrated whereby part of the fluid under treatment is recirculated, to ensure adequate flow through the apparatus for efficient separation when the net flow available is small. The devices may remove particles 'from gas in air conditioning of buildings and vehicles, downstream of a scrubber or cooling tower or separate dirt from the liquid effluent of a gas washing process.
