Reacting polyethylene glycol ethers containing at least 2 OH groups and having a mol. wt. of at least 1000 with (a) monofunctional isocyanates of at least 8 C hydrocarbons or (b) polyisocyanates, mercapto-alcohols, amines or monocarboxylic acids with at least 8 C in amounts such that this hydrocarbon residue forms not more than 6% of the weight of the reaction product.
