The efficiency of laser pulses used for welding is measured by measuring the temp. rise in the workpiece when the latter is arranged as a black body, i.e. when all the laser energy impinging on it is absorbed and converted to heat. The energy is determined by the energy stored in a capacitor which brings about the same temp. rise. The ratio between the temp. rise produced by a laser beam in a prodn. arrangement to that of a black body indicates the proportion of laser energy absorbed. If the amount of energy absorbed by the workpiece is known, optimum treatment conditions can be specified. The result is a better quality of weld.
