The cryostat, for superconducting coils, has the superconducting coils enclosed in a non-magnetic steel tube containing liquid helium and itself enclosing an inner axial tube. A buffer tube encloses the steel tube and is itself surrounded by a vacuum region. The liquid helium tube is connected to the buffer tube via a valve which opens when a given pressure is reached inside the steel tube. The valve prevents dangerous pressure increases inside the steel tube, and the buffer tube allows these pressures to be reduced without losing liquid helium thus reducing cooling costs.
