Hand-guided vibratory tamper for building ground consists of a motor with the crank drive connecting rod jointed to a piston disc, and a tamper foot which can slide in guides in the housing and is connected by springs to the piston disc. The springs between the housing and foot are arranged such that both these masses are accelerated by the springs during the first half of each stroke and decelerated during the second half. Preferably the guide rod fast to the foot is displaceably guided in slide bushings on the housing. The guide rods may be respectively at the corners of an equilateral triangle. The springs are used as power accumulators for both directions of motion of the foot.
