Each regenerator has two amplifiers, one for each direction, and it is so constructed that not only does it amplify and retransmit signals, but is also able to switch the output of one amplifier into the input of the other. It performs this switching in response to suitable commands transmitted down the line, and the effect of this operation is that, with the right configuration of switches - all of which are solid state - a message from a sending source may be returned to the sender using any designated regenerator as the link. A programme of tests is therefore constructed to transmit a message, and return it via the first regenerator, then the second, the third, and so on. The message is checked and if any regenerator is faulty, it is then located by this means. Each regenerator contains a demodulator, band pass filters, a dealy unit and logic elements.
