The silencer is of the type wherein a cylindrical housing, with inlet at one end contains a bush with outlet via an air permeable wall and pressure relief means to permit direct exhaust to atmosphere when flow resistance through the wall exceeds a certain limit. The housing has an open cover at the other end, in which the bush is slidable. The bush being sealed relative to the cover and, piston fashion, relative to the inside wall of the housing. The bush is slidable against an adjustable pressure inside the housing, the arrangement being such, that when it is displaced against this pressure, it permits the air to escape directly to atmosphere.
