A method of making uses steam heating to soften and polystyrene, blocks uses steam heating to soften and bond the pre-expanded particles together between perforated mould walls, which are wholly or partly double shells. The vertical walls of the mould are sub-divided into horizontal sections, in each of which the feed and removal of steam, air and/or condensate are controlled.
