The articulated towing unit is coupled to a spare bogie comprising a twin axle unit and a towing bar. If a container is to be loaded the spare bogie is spaced away from the towing unit as the container is lowered. The towbar is pivoted on the top of the bogie, with an extension of the towbar extending past the pivot point. This extension is engaged by the dropping container to swing the towbar up into a position to rest under the container, so that it can be secured. The system eliminates the heavy manual effort required to lift the tow bar.
