Compacted iron ore granulate for steel prodn - comprising powdered ore rolled into plates followed by crushing and rotary drum treatment

Fine-grained iron ore, e.g. Fe2O3 grain-size 0-5mm is mixed with 3-5% each of CaO and water and the mixt. fed to a roll-press where it is pressed into plates which fall from the press into a spiked-roll crusher. The granules leaving the crusher are 0-25mm in size and are passed over a sieve to remove the fines (F1), 0-5mm in size. The coarse grains (5-25mm) are fed to a rotating drum where the granules are rounded and loose powder rubbed off, after which the material passes over a second sieve where fines (F2), again 0-5mm are removed; F1 and F2 are returned to the mixer. The coarse granules remaining on the second sieve is the finished prod. which has sufficient strength for transport, storage and use in blast or shaft-furnaces.
