The seal between the breech block and barrel end ensures that the gases generated on firing caseless ammunition do not escape. The seals have also a long life. The barrel has at its rear end an annular groove around the central barrel bore. The breech block has a sealing rim which engages with the sealing groove in the barrel end. The seal is also connected to the cartridge support and the rear end of the barrel has an opening into which this cartridge support fits. The seal is pressed firmly against the walls of the groove on firing and an absolutely gas tight seal is formed. The seal is not directly exposed to the heat generated and this increases the life of the breech block mechanism.
