Mono- and dihalo-1-methyl-3-phenylindanes - by reacting mixture of styrene and halostyrene in presence of concentrated phosphoric acid

1-Methyl-3-halophenylindanes of formula (I) useful as intermediates for the prepn. of dyes and parasiticides, and dihalo-1-methyl-3-phenylindanes of formula (II), are prepd. by reacting a mixt. of a styrene of formula (II), are prepd. halostyrene of formula (IV) in the presence of phosphoric acid having a concn. of =75% and opt. of org. cpds. absorbing light between 2000 and 8000 A, or by a similar reaction using halostyrenes of formula (IV) as starting materials. (where R1, R2 and R3 are each H, or alkyl, and R4 is halogen) (I) and (II) are given in good yields and method is commercially possible.
