Prevention of ice formation on roads and pavements - by spraying with an aq. soln. of calcium and or magnesium chloride and effective wetting agent, to increase surface adhesion

The soln. opt. contains 30-40 wt.% CaCl2 and/or MgCl2 and 0.05-0.2 wt.% wetting agent. The wetting agent is opt. a short-chain alkylphenoloxyethylate or an isomeric mixture thereof, the degrees of oxyethylation being 3-9 and the alkyl group containing 1-5C atoms. 0.1-0. litres are opt. sprayed per m2 surface. It is easier and cheaper to apply than solids and has low run-off. A very thin layer is formed, so that only insignificant quantities are picked up or splashed by vehicles, minimizing corrosion. The layer remains active for several months, despite repeated atmospheric pptn. Snow is prevented from freezing to road surfaces.
