The automatic winding machine has a holding fixture for several coil bobbins where the holding fixture transports the bobbins, one after the other, into the region of an arrangement for winding the wire ont the bobbin and onto the terminals of rectangular cross-section. The connecting wire between the last completed terminal winding of the already wound coil bobbin to the first terminal winding of the follow-on unwound coil bobbin is separated. The separation equipment inserted between the last wound coil and the first unwound coil uses the method that teh traction forces from the interconnecting wire to the two terminals are simultaneously effective by the activation of the separation equipment. The wire between the last wound bobbin terminal and the first wound terminal of the follow-on unwound bobbin is sheared-off at the terminals by the corresponding lateral deflection of the wire between them.
