The object is to provide control of model speed, for example a toy railway with magnetic suspension, without the complication of either a continuous primary winding along the whole of the track or sliding power and control contacts between track and vehicle. The problem is resolved by beaming in both energy and control signals from selected points along the track. Electromagnetic radiation is typically employed, for example in the higher megahertz bands, and use may also be made of optical control links. The stationary parts of the motor may be made from ferro magnetic and, or permanently magnetic material, and these may also be used as the aerials.
