Spindle press has an axially non-displaceable, rotatable spindle carrying a flywheel and drivable in both directions by respective drives; the lower spindle end has a counter-thread for the thread of the press ram, which it moves up and down by rotation of the spindle. Conventionally, both drives can be coupled directly with the flywheel. Preferably, the drives are above and below the flywheel, in the direction of the spindle longitudinal axis, and can be frictionally coupled to it. The flywheel can be pressed against the drives, by respective pressure-medium cylinders and is held by resilient pressure in the uncoupled position.
