A numerically controlled lathe can be used for the dynamic balancing of workpieces before or after machining, by very simple attachments without the necessity of complicated balancing machines. Two vibration-sensitive pickups are attached to the forward quill bearing and to the forward main spindle bearing. An angle sensor is driven by the spindel through a positive drive belt. Indicators are linked to the pickups and the sensor and show the magnitude and position of any unbalance.
