The van Der Graaff HV generator for demonstrations has the belt motor situated inside the belt loop itself and driving it with an external rotor. The belt runs round an upper and a lower roll, surrounded by conductor for charge accumulation. Locating the motor in this position enables the belt to be changed simply and easily. The outer surfaces of the rotor are covered with a layer of hard PVC; the belt may be of silicone rubber, soft PVC or natural rubber, and the upper roller may be of metal or acrylic glass. The charge supplying and charge removing brushes at the bottom and the top of the belt are constructed from metal whiskers 0.03mm thick.
