The roller brush of the shoe cleaning appts. is mounted at one end of the shaft in an extensible slide block and webs pointing in the axial direction of the roller brush are provided on the slide block and slide block guide so that when the slide block is in the rest position one web extends U-shaped round the free portion of the guide. The second web is mounted next to the bearing opening on the slide block which is at right angles to the displacement direction of the block between the arms of the U-shaped web. The extent of the webs above the end side of the block is greater than the largest distance between the end side of the block and the end of the shaft when the brush is axially retracted. The webs thus form a closed barrier which the end of the shaft cannot pass so that the latter can only engage in the bearing opening of the slide block to ensure the correct position.
