A tape recorder especially of the cassette type, has one or more DC motors driving the capstans. A control device is fitted with a programmable switch by means of which individual functions can be pre-programmed. An impulse generating device on the input side of the control device, receives impulses from the winding motor. When such an impulse does not arrive from the motor, the impulse generator releases an impulse to the control device, so that one of the DC motors and/or the voltage regulator is adjusted. Pref. an impulse uncoupling capacitor is also incorporated to feed voltage interruptions from the collector of the winding motor to the impulse generator.
