Composites contg. 1.5 wt. % Al, Ti and/or Mg, and min. 50 wt. % iron, either in one piece or in individual parts, are scrapped by melting down in a nitrogen-contg. non-oxidising atmos. opt. with the addn. of other alloying elements, and are cast in the absence of oxygen. The atmos. used in casting is pref. a non-oxidising atmos. contg. nitrogen. Valuable raw matls. are recovered, unsightly dumps abolished, and an additional use found for the N2 obtd. as a by-prod. in the mfr. of oxygen for steel making.
