The throttle linkage is coupled to a damper which is hydraulic, pneumatic or electric and which retards the rate of drop of engine speed when the foot is lifted off the foot pedal to change gear. In the case of pneumatic dampers the venting hole is covered by a movable cover to enable the driver to set the rate of engine speed drop. The system reduces the gear change shocks on the transmission for inexperienced drivers, and is simple to construct and fit. The damper cylinder is mounted directly above the pedal mechanism, on an extension of the operating rod, and is mounted to pivot.
