Worm gearing for use as reduction gear - has two part housing with worm gear and two gear sets

The design avoids the need for auxiliary gearing to reduce motor speed before being fed into the worm gear. This is achieved by two integral sets of gears with a clutch. There are five bearing positions in the housing situated at right angles to the worm gear. There are compartments for the worm gear and for the primary and intermediate gear sets. The clutch can couple or uncouple the pinion of the primary gear set with the worm shaft and the driven gear-wheel of the primary set with the pinion of the intermediate gear set. The clutch is external to the worm gear housing. The worm shaft is hollow and encloses the primary gear set pinion. Similarly the output gear shaft of the primary gear is hollow. This encloses the pinion of the intermediate gear set.
