The generator circuit for charging a motor vehicle battery has an additional excitation winding with a tapping which is connected to the centre point of the star-coupled phase windings. The ends of the additional excitation winding are connected over diodes to opposite poles of the battery, i.e. to the generator output terminals. This circuit improves the generator efficiency and power, and gives reliable operation. Passing the load current through the additional excitation winding raises the excitation power and makes the increase in power possible. Alternatively the tapping may be omitted and two further diodes may connect the star centre point to the additional winding ends.
