The hammer shaft is provided with a shoulder behind which a spring loaded ball rests in order to hold the shaft away from the striking mechanism. The length of the shoulder is such that the ball is in contact with the shoulder during working conditions and is prevented from falling in front of the shoulder until the internal combustion engine is stopped, when the hammer will fall down under its own weight and ball will spring above the shoulder. The spring tension behind the ball is adjustable. The hammer is brought into the working position by applying more force in an axial direction to the hammer than is applied by the spring.
