The furnace has a multistage pivoting grate consisting of pivotable adjacent and/or successive step grates and flat grates for common combustion of all types of waste materials and water-contg. sludges. Sludge with 75-85% water content is fed in variable amount and in dependence on the type of rubbish and resulting fire-space temp. via a responsive sludge feeder and metering device to the multi-step grate. Preferably the metering device is controlled electronically and has a drive motor for the forwarding pump beneath the sludge container. Optimal clarification sludge feed is obtained.
