High-strength composite mouldings comprising wood waste and foam matl. are characterised in that the wood waste serving as reinforcement for the foam are differentially distributed within the moulding, their accumulative distribution and structure varying from the outside towards the centre of the moulding. Some zones of the reinforcement may be pre-fixed before foaming takes place. The process is used for the mfr. of articles having the characteristics of sandwich - type mouldings. The prodts. have outstanding rigidity. The prefd. reinforcement for marginal zones of the finished article is wood wool (excelsior) or oblong wood chips which have been pre-fabricated into plate- or dish-shaped components, with the aid of a synthetic homogeneous binder. Alternatively, marginal reinforcement may be effected with cement to achieve a combined density of the wood waste/cement element of 0.6-0.65 g./cc.
