The title compsns. contain cpds. of formula (I) (where R1 is CH3 or C2H5, R2 is H, CH3 or C2H5 and R3 is H, CH3 or C2H5, with the proviso that when R1 is CH3, R2 and R3 are not born H), or a pharmaceutically acceptable acid addn. salt of (I), together with a non-toxic diluent. (I) are selective for the stimulation of gastric acid secretion, and do not give rise to side effects. They may be prepd. e.g. by reaching 4-methylhistamine with HCHO and HCOOH which gives (I) (R1 - R2 = R3 = CH3), or by converting hex-3-yne-1-ol to 1-phthalimido-hex-3-yne which is converted to 1-ethyl-5-(2-phthalimidoethyl) imazole, which is hydrolysed to (I) (R1 = C2H5,R2 = R3 = H).
