The male rotor (8) has lobes projecting beyond the pitch circle. The female rotor (9) has matching helical recesses extending inwards from the pitch circle. When the compressor is not running the clearance between the lobes is a maximum but as the rotors expand due to the heat of compression, the clearance diminishes and this reduction is a maximum at the delivery end of the rotors and may be insufficient to prevent contact. To mitigate this effect the rotors are so shaped that the clearance when cold varies from a minimum at the inlet end to a maximum at the outlet.
