The ultraviolet lamp, for example mercury vapour or halogen lamp, is used especially for exposing photographic plates for the graphic trades. The ultraviolet light source with its surrounding radiation enclosure is covered with a transparent cover which has open sides. The reflector has an opening which is covered with an air lock and the housing chamber behind the reflector has a cooling fan. The air lock flap faces the cooling fan. The lamp is preheated by infrared heating elements which may be switched on together with the ultraviolet lamp. The rising hot air is trapped by the air lock so that low power heating elements can be used. The flap opens to admit cooling air when the fan operates due to excessive heating. The system is compact, rapidly heated and efficiently regulated.
