Stacking or unstacking machine for containers such as bottle carriers with counter bearings for grippers positioned in a mirror picture arrangement on both sides of a stacking area and are height adjustable through a lifting system along vertical guide tracks fitted to the machine frame and which are movable by a control system from an open position away from the containers and an operating position in which they move in opposite directions and are in contact with the counter bearings. The guide tracks have at least two knee lever type double steering systems with knee joints having a swivel coupling with the lifting system and within the knee joint area being attached to at least one of the grippers.
