Internal combustion engines (including rotary-piston engines) are operated with fuels contg. 0.6g Pb/litre by adding crude H2O-contg. methanol as supplementary fuel. By adding aq. MeOH, the Pb content can be reduced without the octane nos. falling below the requirements of DIN 51600 (i.e. RON = 91.0, MON = 82.0, FON = 78.0 for normal-octane gasoline; RON = 98.0, MON = 87.0, FON = 90.0 for high-octane gasoline). The crude MeOH pref. contains 3-40 (esp. 20-30) wt.% H2O, and is pref. added in an amt. of up to 40 wt.% based on the wt. of fuel (esp. 1.5-10 wt.%). The Pb content of the fuel is pref. 0.4 (esp. 0.2) g/litre.
