A number of maximum counters, equal to that of mean values to be detected, is provided; they can be pulled up by a common resettable driver, coupled at the beginning of a reading period with a maximum counter. During the accounting period the driver is coupled to the counter with the lowest reading, until it has reached the reading of the next highest counter, which takes over the coupling. When the device has electromechanical coupling with two counters, the driver is provided with an electric contact which during the pulling up process is connected to a contact of a first counter, through which a coupling magnet is controlled, which switches on and off the other counter.
