The fibres are first compressed into a cylindrical packet inside a cylindrical spinning canister under the action of thruster heads acting in the axial direction, and then held by devices acting against the ends during tying. A single thread is placed by the tying machine several times round the packet and at several places, including the holding devices, and kept at high tension until finally knotted. The thread can be placed round the packet four times in the axial direction, being guided along the outside parallel to the axis, crossing over itself four times at right angles at each end and clear of or tangentially to the central mandrel.
