1428880 Phototropic glass CARL-ZEISSSTIFTUNG [trading as JENAER GLASWERK SCHOTT & GEN] 2 Sept 1974 [1 Feb 1974] 38313/74 Heading C1M [Also in Division C4] A phototropic glass which is free from fluorine and boric oxide and comprises, in per cent by weight: SiO 2 12À1 -13À9 P 2 O 5 30À4 -33À9 Al 2 O 3 22À5 -25À7 ZrO 2 1 - 2À6 Na 2 O 3 - 7À5 K 2 O 5À3 -10À5 CaO 3À1 - 5 BaO 3À1 - 7 SrO 0 - 0À5 PbO 0À4 - 2À5 TiO 2 0À1 - 0À6 La 2 O 3 0À05- 2 Ag 2 O 0À05- 1 CuO 0 - 0À1 Cl and/or Br 0À2 -10; the balance, if any, being one or more compatible constituents. The glass is preferably free of MgO, and preferably exhibits non- crystalline phase separations containing silver and halogen. Preferably the molten glass is cast, cooled to solidify it, and re-heated to 560-640‹ C. for 1-3 hours to develop phototropicity. The glass may be ion-exchange strengthened (e.g. using a molten KNO 3 bath) at a temperature below that at which the viscosity is 10SP14À5/SP poises, to give a stress-layer up to, e.g. 87Á, in thickness.
