The radially-active magnetic bearing with rotary drive consists of the combination of one or more stators and a rotor whose air-gap is monitored by sensors. An a.c. control field is superimposed on the a.c. drive field produced by the a.c. current flowing through the stator winding. If there are n pole-pairs associated with the drive field then there are (n(+-)1) pole pairs associated with the control field. The control field's pole-pairs are modulated by the sensors' outputs. These sensors are supplied from the drive field via transformers. The invention reduces the material requirements of the previous embodiment for greater economy.
