The bearing, of elastomer, natural rubber or synthetic rubber, with reinforcing plates, is esp. suitable for use in railway bridges, where bridge movement can hinder the transmission of brake forces via the ballast bed into the bridge structure and onto the firm bearing. Reinforcing plates and bearing surfaces are cylindrically shaped in the plane of the bridge's main support system, so that variation of the radius of curvature and the angle formed by the epipole of the bearing surfaces with the ideal centre of curvature can influence the bearing's torsion resistance and resistance to horizontal displacement, favourably to the stress on the bridge structure, without any need to change the material qualities of the bearing.
