The combined hydrodynamic and hydrostatic drive of a diesel engine powered shunting locomotive ensures that very low speeds can be readily provided, for loading open slowly moving wagons by automatic loaders. The locomotive can also travel at higher shunting speeds. The hydrostatic drive is more suitable for maintaining constant speed for different traction resistances than the hydrodynamic drive used for normal shunting work or for travelling on open track. The engine drives two hydrodynamic converters for forward and reverse travel. The power from converters is transmitted to wheels by a gear train and shafts with universal joints.
