The socket and the shaft inserted into it taper downwards so that the shaft is firmly fixed in it. The socket is formed by the blade and a bracket partly surrounding the end of the shaft and fixed to the shovel blade. The side of the shaft next to the blade is flat so that the socket is roughly semicircular in cross section. Both lengthwise edges of the shaft bracket have hooks which hook into catches. The catches are preferably formed, not on the wooden shoven blade, but out of a metal fixture plate resting against the side of the blade away from the shaft bracket. The hooks are formed of flaps on the edge of the shaft bracket, and consist of a slit parallel to the axis of the shaft bracket. The slit is open at the underneath flap edge, and closed at the top flap edge.
