Butt connection for two groups of optical fibres - uses interposed apertured foil to give minimum damping losses

The ends of the two groups of optical fibres are bonded together with a pref. metal foil containing light transmission apertures interposed between them. Before the ends of the fibres are brought into contact with the foil, the latter is dipped in an immersion fluid containing a bonding agent to fill the apertures with the bonding agent. Pref. the ends of the fibres and the apertures in the foil are aligned and the apertures in the foil are aligned with each other by shining light through one group of fibres. When the light can be seen through the other group, the two groups are pressed against the foil.
