The sawing installation has least one displaceable carriage, using rollers on guide rods, bearing the saw unit, whose distance from a fixed saw unit is adjustable. The rollers are connected to a drive installation on the carriage, which drive is controllable from a positioning unit. On the machine frame is a lengthways scale, and the driving installation comprises a hand wheel connected via a gear with a roller shaft. On the circumference of the hand wheel is a fine measurement scale which serves, in company with the lengthways scale as a positioning device. At least the part of the handwheel provided with the fine measurement scale is rotatable, independently of the drive movement of the roller shaft and is supplied with a release button which operates a carriage stop.
