In the application of an electrolytic process as means of compression in a heat pump system, the material repd. by the electrolysis is compelled to effect a compression cycle by its collection in a small enclosure having air tight walls. Alternatively, the sepd. material can be used to act upon a second material. Can also be used for generation of fuel gas for transportation. The energy for electrolysis is wholly or partly drawn from the surroundings.
